Haw Haw Haw, Zere Eez Prohblem Een Zee Fronce

As the healthcare debate rages on in the U.S., the Sarkozy administration is attempting to make some cost-saving changes to the universal system in France. As an American, it is really funny to hear some of the stories from other countries where so much is provided by the government and taken for granted. It's not free though, smart guys. It has to come from somewhere.

This is my favorite -

"Yet even the smallest budget moves are proving controversial. Local residents are up in arms over a cost-cutting measure that makes patients pay €1.10 an hour to park at the hospital. 'It's a scandal,' says retired local Communist politician Gérard Eude. 'It goes against the very idea of universal health care.'"

It'd Be A Good Start...

"In a comment published online by the Lancet today, four physicians with the American Academy of Family Physicians argue that more attention should be paid to the dwindling ranks of primary-care docs. They write:

Our system is riddled with unconscionable disparities–geographical, socioeconomic, ethnic, and racial–in health care and health status, which could all be mitigated by consistent access to a medical home. A medical home is a health-care setting that facilitates partnerships between individual patients and their physicians. So, what we really need in this country is universal access to primary care.

The Battle of the Bulge

You've most likely heard about Michael Moore's latest "documentary", "Sicko". Larry King hosted an interview/debate between Moore and Dr. Sanjay Gupta that took place last night regarding the film, and Dr. Gupta's review of it.

Moore seems unable to have a calm and rational discussion unless it is with someone who doesn't challenge him. You may have noticed this in other interviews. I find it interesting how Moore ridicules Dr. Gupta's Indian heritage, and I wonder if he will be criticized for it. Of course, I've just made fun of Moore's obesity in the title of this post, in case you didn't notice. Please watch as Michael Moore shakes his head throughout the news piece, no matter what Gupta is saying, even when making comments that aren't critical of the movie.

If you have the time, I encourage you to watch all of the clips in their entirety. Both people make valid points, but Gupta puts forth more sanguine arguments, and clearly has a better haircut.
